I'm glad to hear that this behavior is going away in 1.9. We have not run into a real-world case where an app needed it, but we've had occasional bug reports from "ambitious" developers who want to find bugs. If it's officially ok to say this isn't supported, having an official document to describe "the right way" would be really, really helpful.
