I'm talking about where that method is effectively used, not
the method itself.  For example, with String#[] you can change
it all you want, but it will typically have no effect on
typical C code that uses Strings (i.e. in Regexp) because they
bypass that method call and in-line the method.  The same could
be done with 3rd-party libraries - most common in C but could
be done in ruby also.
