That's how Perl's `$.' works.  Try

  perl -ne 'printf "%4d:%s", $., $_' file1 file2

Then

  perl -ne 'printf "%4d:%s", $., $_; $. = 0 if eof' file1 file2

So, you can do same thing in Ruby

  ruby -ne 'printf "%4d:%s", $., $_; $. = 0 if $<.eof?' file1 file2
