[ruby-talk:00575] What is with `$.'?

Hi,

I use `$.' the first time. I use that var together with `$<'. Now I
find, that if I call:

	ruby myScript.rb file1 file2 file3

The variable `$<' will switch its name properly. But the variable `$.'
will not be reset during file switch. It will count up in eternity.

I think that is an error. In the manual it is described...

	$. 
	     The current input line number of the last file that was read.

I would understand, that it delivers the current line number of the
file I currently read, right?

So if `$<' switches from `file1' to `file2' the variable `$.' should be
reset to 0 too!

Only during invokation like that:

	cat file1 file2 file3 | ruby myScript

I would expect, that `$.' will counts up without resetting to 0 in the
meantime.

Am I right?...
