I think the concept...might work [it might require an additional state
bit, i.e. a sibling to the current mark bit].  Unfortunately, the
patches might be awhile in coming as it apparently wasn't a high
priority to people in the latest straw poll [1] :).  Currently users
can set malloc_limit to a high value to cut down GC usage from 10 to
about 5 percent, and apparently 1.9.2 has a slightly faster sweep
phase, anyway, since it assigns code nodes to a permanent heap space]
so maybe the straw poll was accurate.
