Sorry, I may have forgotten to give a little background.

Our RPM packages are built in clean chroots. The utility used is called
mock, and it works as follows:

- It sets up a chroot
- It installs a few basic packages such as gcc
- It copies in a Source RPM (cpio archive of tarball, .spec file and
patches, if any)
- Installs the build requirements for the package that needs to be
built, such as in the case of ruby, readline-devel, ncurses-devel, etc.
- It builds the binary package in this chroot

This mechanism allows us to compile software for another version of the
Fedora linux distribution, then the one the system itself is running.

Our buildsystem, named koji, does the same thing on a larger scale and
across multiple architectures. It's where we build packages before they
are released as part of the distribution called Fedora. Any one of the
hosts participating in building our packages, we call a buildhost. These
buildhosts get told (through koji) to build a certain source package
into a binary package, and for that purpose, use mock.

Attached is my .spec file. It carries one patch that is backported from
SVN; see also http://redmine.ruby-lang.org/issues/show/1166 I have
attached that patch here as well for convenience

Along with the tarball from
ftp://ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/1.9/ruby-1.9.1-p0.tar.gz, this is what
I use to build an RPM I can test with:

rpmbuild -ba --target=i586 ruby.spec

Hope this helps, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate,

Kind regards,

Jeroen van Meeuwen
