I think you want

newfile.text =3D path[2...path.length]

or

newfile.text =3D path[2..-1]

That won't solve your nl issue but is more correct.

You do not close the file properly. Better do

open('dirlist.xml', 'w') {|outfile| doc.write(outfile)}

You want REXML::Formatters::Pretty#compact

irb(main):001:0> doc =3D REXML::Document.new
"<root><foo>123</foo><bar><foo>444</foo></bar></root>"
=3D> <UNDEFINED> ... </>
irb(main):002:0> fmt =3D REXML::Formatters::Pretty.new
=3D> #<REXML::Formatters::Pretty:0x10615890 @indentation=3D2, @level=3D0,
@ie_hack=3Dfalse, @width=3D80, @compact=3Dfalse>
irb(main):003:0> fmt.compact
=3D> false

irb(main):004:0> fmt.compact=3Dtrue
=3D> true
irb(main):005:0> fmt.write(doc, $stdout)
<root>
  <foo>123</foo>
  <bar>
    <foo>444</foo>
  </bar>
</root>=3D> [<?xml ... ?>, <root> ... </>]

irb(main):006:0> fmt.compact=3Dfalse
=3D> false
irb(main):007:0> fmt.write(doc, $stdout)
<root>
  <foo>
    123
  </foo>
  <bar>
    <foo>
      444
    </foo>
  </bar>
</root>=3D> [<?xml ... ?>, <root> ... </>]

Kind regards
