[ruby-talk:02639] OT: Japanese names

Every now and then, I'd like to give credit to the writer of some
piece of code. If Andy wrote something, I'd say

  In Andy Hunt's module XYZ, ...

However, most of the writers of Ruby code are Japanese. My
understanding is that Japanese family names are normally written
first, but that sometimes the order is reversed to make it easier for
us damned foreigners ;-)

So, I've got two questions.

1. Is there an obvious way to know which way a name is written, or do
   you just have to know the common family names?

2. What should I write:

        Tadayoshi Funaba's date2 module

    or

        Funaba Tadayoshi's date2 module


   In general, would it be polite to put the family name first? If so, 
   can I then use the normal possessive form?
