Hi,

In message "[ruby-talk:02639] OT: Japanese names"
on 00/05/08, Dave Thomas <Dave@thomases.com> writes:

|So, I've got two questions.
|
|1. Is there an obvious way to know which way a name is written, or do
| you just have to know the common family names?

The latter. But relax. See answer 2.

|2. What should I write:
|
| Tadayoshi Funaba's date2 module
|
| or
|
| Funaba Tadayoshi's date2 module
|
| In general, would it be polite to put the family name first? If so,
| can I then use the normal possessive form?

Don't forget one small tip. Family name must come first when you
write in Japanese. You never write in Japanese? OK, we don't care
name order in general in other languages. To be polite, use the name
order they use.

See [ruby-talk:01515] too.

p.s.
Can you pronounce my full name? It's in given, family order.
Americans often call me 'You-Key-Hero Matz-Motor', and that's OK for me.
