All this discussion reminds to me Eclipse ecosystem. Once a year is 
prepared simultaneous release of Eclipse. Then exist plenty of 
prepackaged variants and you can choose one of them by your needs, e.g. 
if you are Java or Ruby developer. Or you want to build your own stack 
and you will download Eclipse Platform which is the essential part of 
Eclipse and later extend it by plugins you need. May be this could be 
some inspiration for Ruby Core team.
