The smaller it is, the better! I totally agree with Ryan. If the core team has some reservations about breaking stdlib into gems in the near future (1.9.x) that is understandable. Perhaps Ruby 2.0 is the time to make that change. But I think a great proof of concept would be to gem nokogiri and remove rexml for 1.9.3 and see what happens. Let's be blave!
