I bet that Ruby's strptime doesn't handle negative year numbers.

And then, for very old dates, do you use the Julian calendar? if so, does 
the Gregorian calendar start in the 1500's or the 1700's? (it's 
country-dependent, or even, it's catholic vs anglican)

How do you print negative years? does the year zero exist or is it 
skipped? (that is, usually, 1BC is the year 0, 2BC is the year -1, ...)
