How long ago was that? I'm with the project for more than 2 years now
and it has always been fully supported.

.tar.gz it itself says absolutely nothing: it's just an intermediate
storage form; FSFS revisions could be compressed into .tar.gz files
and still have your "funky" data format. So, the real question is:
what's in the .tar.gz files? Something funky maybe?!
