I'm not sure why this would affect security. You can't run code through 
any of them. The worst that can happen is someone specifying very large 
or very small values. Small values can easily be rejected by comparing 
them against the built in defaults. Large values could be capped too, 
for the ones that aren't hard limits, like e.g.  initial heap size. But 
I'd prefer rather not to do this, since I am certain there will be cases 
where someone wants a larger value.

Instead of using env vars one could also use command line arguments, if 
this would be safer. I just did not want to mess with these on my own.
