Since :"#{abc}" is allowed in Ruby, I imagine that any such substitute syntax would preserve that property.

oh I have a guess! Is it because those files are run by miniruby which 
doesn't have a load path yet?

If yes, would it be clearer to add srcdir to the load path and require 
mkmf normally?
