JRuby update, while I'm here

From: "Charles O Nutter" <headius@...>
Date: 2006-03-27 19:51:10 UTC
List: ruby-core #7623
As long as we're on the subject, I thought I'd toss out a little update
about JRuby on Rails.

We have been working feverishly to get Rails working on JRuby before JavaOne
in May. We two active JRuby devs has taken opposite ends of things, with me
focusing on getting the code-generation scripts to function and Tom Enebo
focusing on getting the request pipeline to start working. We've also had a
few other folks contributing little bits and pieces, like a very early
JDBC-based ActiveRecord connector.

A week ago I finally managed to get the generate script running, with all
the built-in generators producing what seems to be correct output. This, by
extension, means that a number of Rails libraries are also loading and
executing successfully. Tom has had some similar success getting Rails to
handle a request, but there's more work to be done there.

Our goal is to be able to install the Rails gem, generate a small Rails app,
and run it (probably deployed in as a WAR file in an app server by JavaOne.
We will be watching Rails as it continues to move forward, so that we can
continue to improve our support for it. We will also likely start submitting
patches if we find any enhancements or changes that might be useful. My blog
listed below will have periodic updates on our progress, as will the JRuby
homepage at jruby.sf.net.

Thank you all for your continuing work on Rails.
