The problem with the code you sent is that you have to go through ALL
The columns store the actual values (doubles), and the rows store pointers to the corresponding doubles. This way, I can update a double directly via the columns, via the rows after dereferencing the pointers.

RCR 320: Extend Rational to interoperate better with floats
Hi, Last October I worked on an extension to the standard Rational library following some discussions about needed functionality on ruby-talk. The RCR at http://rcrchive.net/rcr/show/320 is documented and tested. The primary aim is way to create a Rational from a Float, approximately if necessary. It provides this by extending Rational() to accept floats and strings, and adding methods to reduce a rational approximately. I also added a number of fixes and tweaks, such as a Rational#to_f that doesn't fail for large numerators and denominators as the current version does. What is wrong with my proposal, or what can I do toward seeing it merged? Cheers, Dave
