The problem with the code you sent is that you have to go through ALL
The columns store the actual values (doubles), and the rows store pointers to the corresponding doubles. This way, I can update a double directly via the columns, via the rows after dereferencing the pointers.

No, I originally considered NArray as a base for building a system I now call GridFlow, but quickly dismissed it. Back then I didn't want to use Ruby in GridFlow, and NArray didn't do much about higher-order operators such as fold and scan: it only had some limited cases instead of something general. Also NArray didn't support streaming arrays, that is, arrays that are never fully in RAM at any one point, just streaming thru as if with pipes. For all those three reasons I thought I should write my own thing. Then GridFlow was born, but not even 18 months later I was already considering inserting Ruby back in the picture, and so I did.
