In any case, I was trying to figure out your suggestion.  I said
that ext_x.so uses a few functions in ext_y.so.  I don't see how
#ifdef-ing sections of ext_x.so is going to help.  Were you
referring to something like

#ifdef WIN32
# define DLLEXPORT __declspec(dllexport)
#else
# define DLLEXPORT
