[ ruby-Bugs-7553 ] WIN32OLE leaks
Bugs item #7553, was opened at 2007-01-03 13:05
You can respond by visiting:
http://rubyforge.org/tracker/?func=detail&atid=1698&aid=7553&group_id=426
Category: Standard Library
Group: 1.8.5
Status: Open
Resolution: None
Priority: 3
Submitted By: David Esposito (daveespo)
Assigned to: Nobody (None)
Summary: WIN32OLE leaks
Initial Comment:
I have an app that runs continuously ... It walks the file system using the Win32 Shell object and retrieves metadata from files using the Shell file properties (GetDetailsOf)
Over time, the ruby.exe VM footprint creeps up until the machine runs out of memory
I have stripped the file system walk down to the bare minimum and pasted it below ... I added the ole_free calls and the explicit assignment to nil to try to force the memory to get released but it doesn't appear to have made any difference
If I run this script under Software Verify's Memory Validator, I can see the bulk of the memory being allcoated under the Win32Ole_init stack .. I've attached a screen shot of the stack in case that helps ...
require 'win32ole'
class Importer
def self.import_folder
shell = WIN32OLE.new("Shell.Application")
path = "C:\Documents and Settings\esposito\My Documents"
puts("Scanning top level folder: #{path}")
shell_folder = shell.NameSpace(path)
import_shell_folder(shell_folder)
shell_folder.ole_free
shell_folder = nil
shell.ole_free
shell = nil
end
private
def self.import_shell_folder(folder)
print "\nFOLDER: #{folder.Self.Name}"
0.upto(folder.Items.Count-1) do |i|
item = folder.Items.Item(i)
if(item.IsFolder)
subdir = item.GetFolder
import_shell_folder(subdir)
subdir.ole_free
subdir = nil
else
import_file(folder,item)
end
item.ole_free
item = nil
end
end
def self.import_file(folder, item)
#test = folder.GetDetailsOf(item,1)
putc "+"
end
end
while(true) do
Importer.import_folder
