Dan - You can also try adding -std=gnu99 to your CFLAGS. I know this works around this issue when using gcc-4.0.3 on Solaris 10. Also, while we are talking about Solaris, would someone please comment on the Solaris configure patch I posted to ruby-core a while back in post number 7791?.
