Initial Comment:
I've no problems for faculty with

(1..3000).to_a.inject { |i,x| i * x }

Then i tried a method from the german user guide:

def fact(n)
   if n == 0
      1
   else
      n * fact(n - 1)
   end
end

For n
   <= 2500: ok
   =  2600: stack level too deep (SystemStackError), seems ok
   >= 3000: segmentation violation
