Might want to review gc_api.[hc] patches from here:

https://github.com/kstephens/ref/tree/master-mri-gc_api/patch

These patches support callbacks to implement efficent WeakRef and 
ReferenceQueues as discussed in:

http://redmine.ruby-lang.org/issues/4168

There might be some idea/design overlap.
