That being said, the original specs were mostly from him, so I think
we're reasonably good there.

Latest patch uploaded should hopefully accomodate this, and adds a test for it.

Yeah I agree--I even tried to originally (by trying to refactor the
original C based patch) but I could not seem to understand io.c well
enough to get it to work. Maybe you could help me, or somebody out
there?
My thought would be to use just the pure ruby version until somebody
can commit a pure C version of it (like require_relative did for
awhile).
