I tried it (naively for every syscall) but it made common case slower
with a hot VFS cache.  I lost my measurements, but I remember it wasn't
worth it to me: I work on apps that are both multi-process and
multi-threaded.

With more work, we can GVL for longer periods when stat()-ing many
files.  Maybe I'll retry for the 1.9.4 timeframe.
