Is there any reason why we can't have Pathname do [untested]:

and stick to the same interface?
If there's nothing stopping us, then to what extent can Ruby Inline
help us get there? Possibly we could make (some variation of) that
an idiom, so that we always provide the fastest implementation we
can. It only breaks DRY for the cases where the C cannot be
generated from the Ruby automatically, which hypothetically are
fewer and fewer cases.
