It is intended to allow a full suite of debug code to be inserted in source file without having to leave it there. Since it will primarily key on computed function boundaries, it should require only minor tweeking to insert its code in later versions of the software (assuming maintence mode or at least semi-stable project). Currently, for example I have inserted (successfully I might add) code automatically in all functions in eval.c that prints the function name when that function executes. A rather brute force feature, but it worked and eval.c compiled and ruby ran without any hand tweaking at all.
