I do have a mailing list, and for the three persons who use it, it has worked 
very well allowing us to talk about concepts in much more detail (and 
tangential) then would be stomached on ruby-talk.

For a very simple reason: without broader-based support the list can not 
fulfill its potential. So without some offical, or at least semi-official, 
backing the list simply won't be taken seriously, and thus will remain low in 
user count, which in turn undermines its most significant benefits. Take for 
example the current list which you referred to above, 'suby-muse@berlios.de'. 
The name does not give any real indication of what the list is for. My hope 
is to have a name like ruby-rcr@rubyforge.org. This would help provide some 
of the "officialness" essential for the list to really make a difference.
