NetBSD pkgsrc is exactly the same - it's multiplatform too
(Linux and MacOSX and Solaris work well). That's what we call
'meta-packages'.


That's only ruby 1.6.8 at present, though once rubygems matures it
would be interesting to look at integrating the two...

The FreeBSD crowd created something called 'BSDpan' which set out
to unify CPAN and the freebsd ports tree, haven't used it for a while
but it's still active AFAIK. I'm sure that could be useful?
