Well, there's the fact that all variables in Ruby are already
references :-)  So you can do things like:

  e = ENV
  e["USERNAME"] = "Ruby"
  p ENV["USERNAME"]      # "Ruby"

Can you give an example of something you would need the extra layer
of reference for?
