Fantasy for the day...

str = "foo bar"
x, y = str[/(foo) (bar)/, 1, 2]

x    # ==> "foo"
y    # ==> "bar"

Oh, well, there is always this:

(x, y), = str.scan(/(foo) (bar)/)
