For something more like LWP, especially the classes like LWP::UA which give higher-level (easy) access to HTTP, you probably want HTTP-Access2 http://raa.ruby-lang.org/list.rhtml?name=http-access2 It includes things like seamless HTTPS handling and cookie helper classes.
