Using the svnserve network server avoids the need for Apache 2 (though obviously not BerkeleyDB, which is fundamental to how Subversion stores data). If you use svnserve, setting up a public server is quite simple: do the './configure ; make ; make install' dance steps, and then add a line to inetd.conf to run svnserve on the standard port. --amk
