Instead, I was saying that if there's a File::read which takes the additional seek parameter, then it would seem to be consistent to add it to #read as well. Having said all that, I think there is a major flaw in the suggestion. The seek parameter is meaningful to File.read, but may not be to IO#read. So, I think we'll just that that one quietly die ;-) Dave
