To get it to work, I had to change my path, putting /usr/local/bin at 
the front. This makes it so that ruby will look in the correct places 
for its dependencies.

bash/zsh:
PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH

(t)csh:
path=(/usr/local/bin $path)

this *should* work. it did for me anyway (using zsh)
