I am the author of this library on RubyForge:

http://rubyforge.org/projects/lego-mindstorms/

It requires DRb and works only on RCX 2.0 (USB Port interface).
(Although it can be easily modified to not use DRb).

Give it a whirl and please let me know how it goes.
