Do you like the following?  uri.rb is bundled with current stable releases.
    
    require "uri"
    
    URI.extract("foo bar http://foo.bar.com/foobar mailto:foo@bar.com")
    #=> ["http://foo.bar.com/foobar", "mailto:foo@bar.com"]
