Thanks for the advice. I reported this problem Saturday morning US 
Pacific time. It is now Sunday morning. In the intervening day others 
and I have (1) confirmed my observations, (2) carried on an off-list 
discussion of the problem, and (3) applied a patch developed by kapheine 
that completely solves the problem.

And we all did it for free. It was even fun.
