I wrote a patch for speeding up GC (proportional tuning), giving a
tremendous boost in performance. I posted the final version of it in
message #5917.

For a more long-term solution, see message #8696: a more ambitious
patch implements generational GC. I have not tried it yet. It is supposed
to be included in Ruby 1.7 / 1.8.
