To follow up on this, I've been working on a little utility to generate DOOM maps programmatically (using Ruby, of course): http://rubyforge.org/projects/ruby-doom/ One of its current features is a "Nethack renderer", i.e.: http://ruby-doom.rubyforge.org/ I've released a couple of versions and things seem to be working out well so far...
