If you're working with a massive number of records, but not editing each
of them in place all the time (or even if you are, it's highly
dependent) - have you considered using SQL? As external databases are
designed for managing data as large as yours, perhaps you should
consider that as an option. Especially since ruby has pretty nice
support for sql, in my experience (at least, mysql).
