It's a totally alien concept to me that the Perlisms should put someone off Ruby. They may be ugly, but if everyone acknowledges that, then isn't that OK? Don't get me wrong, I've seen some nasty looking Ruby code in my time, but I've barely seen any code that uses the Perlisms.
