It wasn't the author who replied, but I'm trying to construct a new
Makefile for the package to fix this, which I will pass on to the author
as a patch.

I've lost one piece of information, though: How does Ruby know where its
.../ruby/site_ruby/ directory is?  I thought there was a config module, or
something, but can't find anything like it on Ruby Central and my copy of
the book is at home just now.

The relevant directory does end up in $:, but so do a whole load of
others.  I need this for the "optparse, install thyself!" bit of the
makefile.
