You may be able to simply change each of the "+" (one or more) in the regex into "*" (zero or more).  I gave it a quick test and it seems to work OK, but I didn't test very hard.

   pat = %r{([^^]*)\^([^^]*)\^([^^]*)\^([^^]*)\n}mox
