You could also use YAML:

require 'yaml'
one = {"Name" => "Smith", "Surname" => "John"}
two = {"Name" => "Dupont", "Surname" => "Jean"}

myFriends = [one, two]

File.open("myfriends.db", "w") {|file| file.write(myFriends.to_yaml)}
myFriends = File.open("myfriends.db") {|file| YAML.load(file)}
