 #compact! return nil if it don't modify the receiver : this is #compact!
  which return nil. With :

   @dirs += entries.collect{|f| stuff_here(f)}.compact!

 ruby will do

   @dirs += nil

 if #compact! don't modify the result of  `entries.collect{...}'
