thanks Ben & Dan for your answers. 
Looking it now it seem _so_ obvious to me that this must be related to
the available memory.
What fooled me was that trying similar code in other languages went
fine. Possibly Ruby just uses little more space for Floats.

Sorry for not thinking a little more :)
