Subject: why not pod?

Is there a good reason why ruby has its own format for embedded
documentation?

If only ruby would see:

=pod as an alias for =begin

and

=cut as an alias for =end

then perldoc, pod2html, pod2latex, pod2text, pod2man, and pod2usage would
all work with ruby scripts as well as with perl scripts.

This would also free us from ugly constructs like ((% something %))
