Oh, beware that the child will share stdin / stdout / stderr with your main
process. If you don't want that, you can reopen them:

    pid = fork {
      STDIN.reopen('/dev/null')
      # ditto for STDOUT and/or STDERR if you wish
      exec(program,*args)
    }
