Just mount the directory (or a suitable parent directory) as a text
directory (mount -t ...) and cd to it before running blah.rb, and it works
just fine. This is my output:

[tt@aljechin 00:14:51 /tthome/tmp]
$ ruby blah.rb
["julia", "justin"]
